03 — FDA reality check What the brand pages don't say

Walk through any of these four brand sites and you'll find one of three FDA-flavored claims: "Class II Medical Device", "FDA Class II Registered", or "manufactured in an FDA registered facility". These sound like 510(k) clearance — they're not.

  • Joovv: "Class II Medical Device" + IEC 60601 safety standard. Not in openFDA 510(k).
  • Mito Red Light: "Class II Registered". Not in openFDA 510(k). (Note: the brand does explicitly distinguish registered from cleared in its own copy — credit for that.)
  • PlatinumLED: "FDA Class II Medical Device manufactured in our FDA registered facility". Not in openFDA 510(k).
  • Hooga: No FDA claim at all — page reads "have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration". Most accurate of the four.

"FDA registered" means the manufacturer registered its establishment with the FDA. The FDA did not review the device. "FDA cleared" requires a K-number issued after 510(k) review — and none of these brands hold one for their panels. 05 — How to choose What to look for in a panel spec sheet
  1. Published wavelengths in nm. Vague terms like "red LED" or "near-infrared" are not specs — they're marketing. Look for specific values: 630, 660, 810, 830, 850 nm are the common workhorses; 480 (blue) and 1060 (deep NIR) are uncommon additions.
  2. Irradiance at a stated distance. "Up to 200 mW/cm²" without a distance usually means peak at the lens (0 inches). Real-use distance is 6 inches. Always look for the qualified number.
  3. Measurement method. Consumer light meters read 2–3× higher than professional spectroradiometers in the NIR range. Mito Red Light publishes both; most brands publish only the higher consumer-meter number without saying so.
  4. Coverage area, not just power. A 600 W panel rated at 170 mW/cm² that lights up your torso for 10 minutes delivers more total energy than a 90 W panel at 130 mW/cm² that lights up your face for 10 minutes. Match the panel to the area you want to treat.
  5. FDA language — read carefully. "Class II Medical Device" or "FDA registered" is establishment-level designation, not device-level clearance. Only "FDA cleared" with a verifiable K-number means the FDA reviewed the product.

Joovv vs Mito Red — which is the better buy?
Mito Red Light wins on price-per-irradiance and on transparency: they publish their irradiance two ways (consumer meter and professional spectroradiometer) and tell you which to trust. Joovv wins on brand recognition, modular ecosystem, and resale value. Neither is FDA 510(k) cleared — Joovv's "Class II Medical Device" marketing and Mito Red's "Class II Registered" marketing both refer to establishment-level registration, not device clearance. Are any major red light therapy panels FDA cleared?
As of 2026-05, none of the four major consumer panel brands — Joovv, Mito Red Light, PlatinumLED, Hooga — appears in the openFDA 510(k) database as an applicant. Several brands hold "FDA registered" status (manufacturer establishment registration), and several cite "Class II" classification, but those are different and weaker designations than 510(k) clearance. How close should I stand to a red light therapy panel?
Most clinical protocols and manufacturer guidance use 6 inches (15 cm). Irradiance drops quickly with distance — at 12 inches you typically receive roughly 25% of the 6-inch reading. If a panel publishes irradiance only at 0 inches ("at the lens"), it is reporting peak chip output, not delivered dose at use distance. Treat that number as marketing, not spec.
How long should a session be?
Manufacturer guidance converges on 10–20 minutes per body area, 3–5 sessions per week. Skin protocols run shorter (8–12 min); muscle and joint protocols run longer (15–20 min) at closer distance. Doubling session time does not double the effect — photobiomodulation has a biphasic dose response, where too much light can suppress the same pathways small doses activate.
Are budget panels (Hooga, etc.) clinically equivalent to premium ones?
On specs, the gap narrows dramatically: Hooga's top SKU publishes irradiance comparable to panels 3-4× the price. Where premium brands genuinely differentiate is build quality, warranty length, customer support, and resale value — none of which show up in a spec sheet. For a buyer who values output-per-dollar and tolerates lower service expectations, budget tier wins. For a buyer who wants long-term ownership and brand support, premium tier earns the markup.
What about whole-body coverage — do I need multiple panels?
A single mid-size panel (300–600 W class) covers roughly the front of the torso at 6 inches. True full-body coverage typically requires either a tall panel (1500+ W class) or a multi-panel rig — Joovv and Mito Red both sell modular vertical setups for this. If you mostly target a specific joint or muscle group, a smaller panel (e.g. Joovv Go 2.0, Hooga PRO300) is the cheaper path.
